The Advantages of Hair Conditioners, Addressing Potential Skin Irritants, and Alternatives for Sensitive Skin

The rise of hair conditioners can be traced back to ancient civilizations where the demand to style and manage hair became prevalent, particularly in regions with dry climates. Natural ingredients like olive and castor oils, and plant extracts were used to add volume to their hair make it more manageable, especially when dealing with tangled or flyaway strands.

In recent decades, the advent of modern industrialization has led to the development of advanced hair conditioners, including surfactants, creams, gels, and silicones, which have significantly enhanced manageability, shine, and smoothness of hair. However, this progress also brought about an increase in skin irritations caused by certain chemical ingredients present in hair products. Consequently, there has been a growing demand for natural conditioners that are not only gentle on the skin but also environmentally sustainable.

These demands have prompted the industry to seek new developments that retain the qualities of hair manageability while minimizing skin irritation. This pursuit has led to the exploration of innovative formulations and ingredients that offer effective conditioning properties without compromising on skin health.

Hair Conditioning Ingredients We Use

Daikon Seed Oil

The delicacy that daikon seed oil bestows upon hair for detangling and smoothness is intricately intertwined with the composition of its fatty acids. Daikon seed oil comes from the Raphanus Sativa plant, also common in many asian dishes. It's seeds brings a unique oil that can be utilized for demands that require a lighter oil, as opposed to a heavy oil like coconut or olive oil. Bringing back slip, detangled, and smooth hair requires a lighter oil similar to silicones without the irritability it comes with.

Coconut-based

Coco-Caprylate/Caprate

Coco Caprylate/Caprate is a unique lightweight emollient that is derived from coconuts. Promotes a smooth and silky feel for the hair during and after the conditioning process.

Coco Caprylate/Caprate is created by reacting coconut alcohol with caprylic acid and capric acid. A 100% natural, renewable, and sustainable ingredient with gentle and non-polar characteristic. It's ultra-light fast-absorbing emollient property gives this a botanical alternative for silicones.

Olive-based

Cetearyl Olivate and Sorbitan Olivate

Cetearyl Olivate and Sorbitan Olivate are beneficial hair emulsifiers that's derived from the fats within olives. The oils in olives are reacted with sugar alcohols such as sorbitan which is derived form potato starch, or reacted with fatty alcohols such as cetearyl alcohol which is derived from coconuts or palm fruits.

This all natural emulsifier makes this a great sustainable, renewable, biodegradable, non-toxic, and non-irritant ingredient.

Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride

Guar beans, a name you might recognize, are the source of guar gum, often used in recipes for its thickening properties.

Extracted from guar beans, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride offers a distinctive quality, serving as a gentle alternative for effortless hair grooming. Its special positive charge, infused into hair conditioners, prevents strands from sticking together, facilitating smoother and easier detangling.

Alternative Antimicrobials We Use Instead of Conventional Ones

Lactobacillus & Coconut Extract

This naturally derived preservative is sourced from coconuts and the probiotic bacteria lactobacillus.

The art of fermentation not only results in preserved pickles for consumption but also proves to be a valuable method for preserving other items susceptible to spoiling. Coconuts contain unique fats, including the medium-chain triglyceride lauric acid, known for its antifungal, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties. During the fermentation of coconuts by lactobacillus, not only is lauric acid enhanced, but additional beneficial antimicrobial compounds are also generated.

The distinctive compounds within coconuts, such as lipopeptides and phytocompounds, combined with the fermentation by lactobacillus, yield valuable antifungal and antibacterial compounds. The digestion and interaction of these lipopeptides in coconuts by lactobacillus bacteria produce preservatives that can be utilized through natural fermentation, providing a naturally derived, non-toxic, and skin-friendly alternative for natural skincare products.

Radish Root Ferment Filtrate

A root vegetable sourced alternative preservative in our products.

Distinguished by its unique approach to combating bacterial formation, this natural preservative plays a pivotal role in natural products seeking a non-synthetic and non-toxic preservation option. This antimicrobial excels in extending the shelf life of products and reducing the risk of external contamination. Derived from fermented radish root (Raphanus sativus), a common ingredient in pickling across Korea, China, and the Middle East, the Leuconostoc kimchii fermentation filtrate stands out as both functional and cost-effective as an antimicrobial agent.

As Leuconostoc kimchii feeds on the radish root, the bacteria possess the ability to preserve itself by inhibiting the growth of competing bacteria, a phenomenon attributed to the production of bacteriocins and lactic acid during fermentation. These compounds act as antimicrobials, creating an environment inhospitable for competing bacteria to thrive. Importantly, unlike some bacteria found on our underarms, the Leuconostoc kimchii bacteria are not odorous.

The filtrate from this radish root ferment emerges as an excellent alternative for individuals with reactive skin, providing a safe and non-toxic option compared to commonly used synthetic preservatives.

Healthy Hair Care Tips

Keep Your Hair Healthy

Maintaining Scalp Health: The Impact of Water Temperature

While the comforting warmth of hot water can be enticing, it's important to be mindful of its potential impact on your scalp. Opting for cooler water temperatures can help mitigate the risk of heat stress, ensuring a healthier environment for your scalp.

Protecting Your Scalp: Dealing with Hard Water Issues

The presence of salts in water, known as hard water, can disrupt the mineral balance of your scalp. To counter this, you might want to invest in a shower filter or test the mineral content of your water to ensure its suitability for your hair and scalp health.

Hydrate from Within: The Key to Healthy Hair Roots

Moisturizing your hair roots is just as essential as hydrating your skin, so don't neglect them! Surprisingly, many individuals overlook this basic principle and fail to meet their minimum daily water intake, which can leave hair prone to dryness and lackluster appearance.

Nourish Your Locks: The Importance of Nutrition for Healthy Hair

Remember, it's not just what you put on your hair, but also what you nourish yourself with that makes a difference. A nutritious diet plays a vital role in maintaining healthy hair. After all, effective hair care begins from within.

Healthy hair is hydrated!

Our skin naturally produces oils to maintain its health. Overuse of shampoo can disrupt your natural oil balance, leading to dryness. To allow your skin to replenish these essential oils, it's important to reduce the amount of shampoo you use. The right amount of shampoo depends on your individual oil production. Finding the balance ensures that your scalp remains hydrated and doesn't become excessively dry.

At Claya, we prioritize the gentle care of all skin types, particularly those prone to sensitivity and conditions like eczema. That's why we've made a deliberate choice to exclude anionic surfactants from our products. These harsh cleansing agents can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to irritation and exacerbating skin conditions. By opting for milder alternatives, we ensure that our products effectively cleanse while maintaining the skin's delicate balance, promoting healthier, happier skin for all.

Excellent product!! The shampoo was clarifying and cleaned my hair extremely well. It’s not as sudsy as a normal shampoo, which made me think I’d need a lot to clean my hair but it actually washes away oil and products very well! The conditioner made my hair so soft and has a fresh citrus smell to it. My hair felt nourished and light after using in addition to the shampoo. I love these products so much! Claya haircare has a customer for life! <3=
